Introduction

First of all who is TIO? Why would I want to insure with them? TIO, founded in 1979, is owned by the Northern Territory Government hence the name Territory Insurance Office. Even though it is "owned" by the Government, the organization operates on a commercial basis. They list their purpose as "Helping build confidence and resilience in the Territory".

As far as insurance, their plans are grouped under two main categories; Personal & Property and Business.

Under the Personal & Property Insurance:

  • Home Insurance - Your home is usually your largest investment and it makes sense to protect it. You have a choice of two types of cover; Accidental Damage and Listed Events. Both provide you with all the basic covers. The Accidental Damage covers your building and contents in the event of fire, theft and accidental loss or damage. Listed Events covers; Fire or explosion, Flood, Cyclone, Storm Surge, Lightning, Earthquake, Theft or attempted theft, Rainwater or wind damage, and Impact.

TIO offers the three standard plans; Comprehensive, Third Party Property Damage plus Fire and Theft, Third Party Property Damage. This, as with the Home Insurance come with handy charts showing you exactly what is covered and what is not. There is also a 5% multi-policy discount available.
  • Boat Insurance - Your boat is an expensive asset and something worth protecting. Boat Insurance covers your boat against accidental loss, or damage while your boat is ashore, in transit or afloat. They have additional benefits for water skiers, fishing gear and towing.

This plan covers you for loss or damage to your building and/or contents, including vandalism by tenants. TIO will even pay your rent if the property is so damaged that it is ruled uninhabitable. This also comes with that handy chart that shows you what is and is not covered.
  • Croc Attack Insurance - Here's something I never want to have to file a claim on but if I do, Crocodile Attack Insurance offers coverage for death resulting from a croc attack in the Territory. The policy pays a sum of $50,000 for a low premium of $10.00.
